Why make horror movies?

I was wondering, why should anyone make a horror movie?
What in the world will anyone be thinking before choosing to make a horror movie?
Why should anyone see a horror movie?
And that too pay money to watch it?

I start this blog with all these questions in my mind. Let me see if I can find an answer for at least one of the above questions.

Movies, as I know, is way of entertaining people. Every movie has some reason/message to convey - happiness, sentiments, valor, action, comedy - all of these are things that each one of us want to do in real life, but are unable to do (for whatsoever reasons).

But, horror, on the other hand is some thing that we would never want to be faced with in real life! Would you want to be horrified to death while you are taking a bath in your bathtub?
Would you want to be mortified to death by a 30 year old child (!), with hair all over her face and slime all over her body? Would you want your face to have a totally warped expression after you die (one eye gouged out, half the face charred, all your hair standing up)? Or, would you want to copy some freak video with pathetic scenes and spread it to everybody so that they can get killed in the next 7 days?

Yes, all the above questions are a direct result of me watching "The Ring - Part 1" recently!
I got curious as it has been crowned the "Scariest movie of the decade". Thanks to my dear friend, who got the DVD from Netflix and setup his big screen projector in one of our other friend's place - that I finally ended up watching that wretched movie.

The movie was scary, no question on that, but what is more astonishing is the hallucination effects that it caused after nearly 2 hours of seeing it. Even as I am typing now, I still get hallucinations of some one walking into my room (FYI... I just looked up to see who it was - only to find no one. Spooky!).

Coming back to my questions, why do we (humans) really make and watch horror movies?
Is there a sadist or a masochist in every one of us. Probably not, as there are people who never want to see horror movies. I have joined their club as of yesterday! Why be horrified by seeing a movie when you never want to be that way in real life?

So much for my rambling, I think I would curb my curiosity in the future and stay away from horror movies henceforth.

Aloha!
