DD Dramas
Recently, had the good (?!) fortune of watching a DD-Podhigai drama. It was quite late in the night, and there was nothing interesting(:D) in any of the channels, so was idly surfing when Podhigai caught my eye. I have always been amazed by DD's sets and set props. They have some of the tackiest sets ever, and perfectly fit the description "Hyder Ali kaalathu"...
The set/props of this particular drama I chanced upon was no different. I started watching it out of curiosity. Sure enough, the theme was a public interest one - it was about the way private chit funds fool the people. Apart from the totally run down set, what caught my eye was the absolutely over the top acting by the lead actor. His character was that of a retired person and a father of two girls, one of whom was ready for marriage. According to the story, the father invests all his retirement benefits in a chit fund or some such, and brags to his wife about the incentive the fund guys gave him - a silver "kaamaakshi" lamp.
It is OK put your point across forcefully, but the lead actor was way too much. In fact, he can give Poornam Viswanaathan a run for his money when it comes to overacting. His facial expressions, dialog delivery and body language were so silly, that even though I was initially irritated, I started having a good laugh later on. The way that person contorted his face to emphasise his self-congratulation on investing his money "wisely" or when he caught his chest and wailed on hearing about the closure of the chit fund where he invested his money was a laugh riot.
I think quite a few of the current serial actors learnt much by acting the DD dramas of yesteryears. But with actors and sets such as those I saw in this drama, I can't see DD being much of a competetion to the private channels at least in entertaining people. No sure if DD thinks of itself as a competitor to Sun or Vijay or even Jaya TV for that matter.
Will DD ever change?
